Spousal and Child Support
After a divorce, both spouses are still required to support their minor children. The state of Louisiana uses the Income Shares Model to determine child support, taking into account the gross income of both parents and the number of children requiring support.
The Income Shares Model is based on the amount of support that would have been available if the parents had not divorced. This amount shall be divided proportionally to the parents according to each party's income. So the spouse with a higher income typically would be responsible for the more significant portion of the child support obligation.
The calculation of child support for a particular divorce case should be performed using the Louisiana Child Support Worksheet.
